dialysis

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Jul 23, 2002 11:09 am

My boyfriend has been on dialysis for two years now. He recently switched to hemodialysis, after starting with the peretoneal dialysis.
He is hoping to receive a transplant from one of his siblings, however tests are still being performed to determine if they are a good candidate.
I am wondering what the life expectancy is for someone receiving only dialysis. He is 34 and has glomerularsclerosis. How long can a person be on dialysis?
After receiving the transplant, how long can a person live with the transplanted kidney?
I have looked all over the web to find these answers, but there isn't much out there when it comes to life expectancy.
Any info would be so greatly appreciated.
Thank you

You probably have more information than I do by now. What the physician treating my future son-in-law told us is that life expectancy after a transplant is good if there are no problems with the kidney and the transplant goes well. Those are a lot of if's...

She also told us that people could be on dialysis a long time prior to a kidney transplant.

My future son-in-law also has glomerular sclerosis that has proven to be steriod resistant and doesn't seem to be responding to cyclosporine.

Did your boyfriend have these treatments?

I have been diagnosed with the same thing. My Nephrologist said you could live 10yrs or more on dialysis. and with a transplant as much as 30yrs or more. I would suggest you check on Baxter website, and Kidney Directions.com they will have a nurse contact you from Staying In Touch.
