dialysis and spotting

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Jun 04, 2002 9:06 am

Hello there. My mother is 68, has polycystic kidneys and has been on dialysis for 18 months. She recently found spotting in her underpants and after she goes to the washroom. Does anyone have any experience with spotting/blood traces and dialysis? (we are awaiting the results of her urine test)
Thank you, Ava

Spotting of blood in the underwear in females can come from the urine or from the vagina. Patients with ADPKD can have episodes of gross hematuria due to ruputured cyst. Often this is painful in the back area overlying the kidney. Urinary tract infection can also cause gross hematuria.
Female Paitnets on HD can on occassion have vaginal discharge. Patients need to be evaluated by the physican to determine the source of the blood and then the cuase of urinary hematuria vs vaginal spotting.

Thank you very much for the quick response. I was wondering if you knew of connection between hematuria and quinine. I found a link between the two on this site and wondered if this, too, could be the cause.
My mother's urine test and the CAT scan (if necessary) will reveal all, but I like to have as much info as possible.
Regards from England,
Ava

I am not aware of a common association between hematuria and quinine sulfate. Futher evaluation including imaging studies seems appropriate.
