renal artery stenosisMy husband, age 74, type 2 diabetic, 4-way heart bypass 3 yrs ago. His creatinine and bun are rising now and he had a nucleur medicine scan. The radiologist report indicated right kidney unremarkable, left appears to have a possible stenosis, with very slow profusion during the test. His kidney doctor says the only way to really know is to have an CAT scan or MRI with the dye, which because his creatinine is 2.8 and bun 60 is very dangerous. But now his blood pressure remains very high with several meds per day and I feel it is the blockage causing this bp problem which does not respond to the meds he is taking by maybe 10 points. This is not normal. I am concerned he will have another heart attack if this bp is not under control and that perhaps he should have this MRI to verify the blockage and do the stent if indicated. If this test ruins his kidney function but allows his bp to be more normal, his risk of another heart attack is greatly lessened, but of course he would be on dialysis from that point forward. These are not very good choices. Should I have another opinion from another kidney specialist? Would it be correct for his heart doctor to have a conference with the kidney doctor, all these specialists are confusing to me, who is really in charge?
