Angiogram

Post a new topicby cfuglein on Thu Sep 11, 2008 2:10 pm

I have PKD and am in Stage IV ESRD. I'm trying to be evaluated for a transplant (I was accepted in a program 4 years ago, and moved, and am trying to get in a closer program). My cardiologist won't release me - he wants to do an angiogram (cardiac catheterization). My cardiologist and transplant RN have both said that such a test could cause me to go on dialysis, which I'm not on yet.

What are the dangers associated with an angiogram and someone with PKD?

Hi,
I have PKD also.

As far as I know, it is the ability of the kidneys to function that causes one to go on dialysis, usually at around 20 % GFR. My hunch is that doctors won't put one on the transplant list until this GFR level is reached.

I beleive a transplant center, (find one in your area) would do their own evaluation.

Maintaing proper blood pressure is VERY important. One, high blood pressure tends to increase the rate at which the kidneys fail, and two, high blood pressure leads to cardiac problems which are the number one cause of death in PKD. Infection is number two.

I was diagnosed with PKD at 46, and with a slight left ventricular hypertrophy (enlarged left ventrical of the heart). It is common in PKD. My hunch is that the condition of ones heart may affect one's position on the transplant list, along with age, and other health issues such as smoking, ect.

Wish I could be more helpful.

Well, in the meantime since when I posted my original and your response, I've had open heart surgery - triple bypass, and have gone on dialysis. I am on the transplant list and am at the top of the list. I expect to get a kidney within a month.

Wow,
I'm very happy for you, that you are at the top of the list. My assumptions must have been wrong. Sorry. I wish you the best.
