nephrotic syndrome

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Aug 07, 2002 9:12 am

My husband (now age 28) was dx w/ MCNS at age 5 or 6. He took Prednisone for extended periods and even took Cytoxan to obtain remission. Since about age 12 or 13 he has had a relapse approx q 3yrs, remission obtained with Prednisone. His last relapse occurred at the end of March 2002. He took Prednisone for 4 months. He did not stop spilling protein until about 1 week after stopping the prednisone (usually he is negative by the time he weans off). After less than 1 mo. he began having massive edema and spilling 3-4+ proteinuria again. He went back on prednisone regimen and after 1 1/2 mo. of prednisone, he is noticing that he urinates very frequent, large amts on the days he takes prednisone but only 1-2 times on days he does not take it. He is also experiencing tremors of the hands, constipation, decreased libido, pallor, extreme fatigue, difficulty sleeping... Could hypothyroidism be a culprit or could this be from long term use of prednisone?

Our son has minimal change syndrome as well. He is not resonding as well as anymore to Prednisone and the doctor is recommending cytoxan. We are curious regarding potential bad side effects of this drug and if you have had any experiences with it.

my son who is now 17 is having frequent relaspes.....we tried cytoxan with him when he was in jr. high school and he had a terrible time with it. For some reason he got a terrible bladder problem that he had to go to the bathroom every 5 min. So it made school impossible, he miss 1/2 of school year and they have no idea why this happen. His new dr. wants to put him on leukeran or chlorambucil.....which is a sister drug to cytoxan but with less side effects...........can i ask what state you live in. we are going to dr.'s in milwaukee wisconsin. my son has chronic sinus infections ....so they think this might be a trigger????

I am a patient of MCNS for the past 9 years. Out of 9 years with out prednisone 3 times (3months, 6 months and 9months.but recent years only one month without medicine. I start with 60mg prednisone with in 3 to 4 weeks become trace (Urine) when it reaches 10 mg relapses with 2+. then again repeat the dose with predinsone. I have been told to have Ramipril. I am going to do my 24 hrs urine protein.
Have you heard of Ramipril. How does it work. any side effects than predinsone?
