nephrotic syndromeI had acute nephrotic syndrome when I was 13 yrs old. I was successfully treated and thankfully have not had any relapses. However I have read more and more lately how high cholesterol and NS can be linked. I am now 28 and my cholesterol has been high ever since I was a teenager, I think it was first checked when I was 15 or 16 and the results were close to 400. My question, even though I had NS 15 yrs ago could it cause my cholesterol to remain so elevated? It has come down but is still high and I have recently been put on medication. I'm just curious even after all these years if there is a link.
Re: nephrotic syndromePTs who have nephrotic syndrome (NS) often have elevated cholestrol-- sometimnes markedly elevated. It is a consequence of the heavy protein spillage in the urine. Once the NS resolves then the elevated cholesterol due to the NS should likewise resolve.
If the cholestrol suddenly increases dramatically then a patient should have his/her urine checked for protein to rule out NS.
I had acute nephrotic syndrome when I was 13 yrs old. I was successfully treated and thankfully have not had any relapses...
