Can Roux En-Y Gastric Bypass help Nephrotic Syndrome

Post a new topicby monnie on Thu Apr 02, 2009 8:51 am

I'm an obese female (BMI 38) whose scheduled to undergo roux en-y gastric bypass. I've underwent prednisone treatment for Nephrotic Syndrome( stemming from focal glomerosclerosis) several years ago..I go every 6month for blood wk and its been in remission thus far. I suffer from hypertension high cholesterol, and obesity. Its been recommended by my doctor to lose weight but to no avail i've failed and gained more weight. I'm hoping that having this surgery will improve my overrall health and underlying conditions..My question would be...will having this surgery help my kidneys (from the weight loss)and help improve the chances of the Nephrotic syndrome(Focal Glomerosclerosis) from returning?

I can't respond to your actual question but I do have information for you. I had the Roux en Y procedure in 1991. For the most part I was very pleased with the overall results. One thing that wasn't right was information from my doctor.
It was ten years before I became aware of the need for either daily sub-lingual B-12 or B-12 injections to prevent neuropathy.
The upshot is that at approx the 12 year mark I not only began to regain weight but have had increasing problems with back (I've had several injuries); wrists, thumbs and index finger; knees; ankles; instep and generalized nerve pain. Although I now take B-12 injections and have taken them regularly for the past 12 years or so the damage cannot be undone.
And since it is, to most doctors, not a known thing I've been mis-diagnosed as psychotic or neurotic when what I am is in unrelieved pain.
I don't do major drugs at all. I'm having a lot of luck with a product (superfood) called All-Day-Energy -Greens. When I avoid white flour, sugar and potatoes I can lose weight and gain energy.
I've been unable to work for several years but also unable to qualify for disability as the medicos don't believe my pain, lack of strength and reduced dexterity is real. I've no insurance (not working, remember?) so tests are out of the question.
So, take care. Correct Nutrition is vital.
I wish you better luck than I've had.
Just as a "by the way" I've found ways to live a very happy and rewarding (if broke) life with teaching myself creative skills and doing "work arounds" when methods require some physical action I do poorly or not at all.
