Nephropexy/Sponge Kidney/Hydornephrosis

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Aug 28, 2002 5:24 pm

Hello. I have recently been diagnosed with bilateral nephroptosis, medullary sponge kidney, and hydronephrosis. 11cm? or inches/can't remember drop when stand on the right, 7 on left.I am scheduled to have surgery next month to attach my right kidney to a muscle in my back. My urologist wants to do the procedure (cut) from my side around to my back and go in and fix it. He said that cutting through the middle would allow us to do both at the same time, however put me at risk for bowel/stomach adhesions. He also said I would be in the same position with a laparoscopic procedure. My question is how are these normally performed when a person has both kidneys falling? What are the percentages of people who get these adhesions, and the outcomes? Please respond when you have a moment. Thank you.

It is not clear what exactly the surgery is for. Patients with medullary sponge kidney (MSK) are at risk for recurrent kidney stones Many patients have decreased urinary citrate excretion and this predisposes them for calcium oxalate stones because citrate in the urine can prevent stone formation.
