False/positive urine drug test from Kidney disease?

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Jul 25, 2002 11:51 pm

I recently found a website that said that kidney disease/stones can be a cause for a false/positive amphetamine/methamphetamine drug urine test. What is it that kidney disease/stones create in the urine that can affect the drug test and cause the false/positive?

I don't have much info except that the website indicated that kidney infection, kidney disease and liver disease are conditions which can cause false positives. The specific gravity was less than 1.003, creatnine was 11.1 mg and methamphetamine was 1469 ng/mL on the drug test result. One week before the person was drug tested she was in the hospital for severe lower back and abdominal pain. A nonionic contract was infused and a kidney stone was passed. Please help.

Since my last reply, I have received a copy of all information from the lab that performed the drug test. Please let me know if there might be more information that you need since I now have access to more info.

Many labs perform a qualitative test when doing urine tox screens for narcotics, amphetamines etc..
No test is ever 100% reliable not only because of human error. Some labs will send out the urine specimen for confirmation or a more elaborate analysis that can quantitate or help to confirm the presence of a particular toxin in the urine or blood sample.
Gas chromatography is one such specialized test used to further evaluate the quantitative amount of amphetamine in the urine. Quest lab is a reference lab used by many hospitals to have gas chromatography done looking for quantitation of amphetmaine in the urine. I am unaware of the rate of false positive fopr this type of testing and also I am unaware of any kidney problems that are associated with false postivies. Nor do I know of other chemicals for instances in over the counter meds that may cause a false positive. I would recommend futher direct inquires to Quest lab directly concerning these specific chemical questions.
