Kidney Atrophy

Recently I had a body scan that showed one of my kidneys was atrophied. The technician told me it “probably” had been that way since birth and I just didn’t know it. While in the process of changing doctors and reviewing some old test results I found in my files, I came across an abdominal ultrasounds done just two years ago that showed “both kidneys of average size and working”. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should do next?

I would recommend a blood test that included a BUN, creatinine, and glomerular filtration rate which would give an indication of how your kidneys are functioning. If those are abnormal, then on to an
Ultrasound of the kidneys, with contrast or better yet an MRA of the kidneys with contrast. This can detect abnormalities in size of the kidneys, renal stenosis, (a blockage of the artery causing decreased blood flow to the kidney(s)),which could be a cause of atrophy.
