When the doc said you had an "obstruction", are you sure he was referring to a stone? What kind of surgery did they schedule you for. I had a surgery for stone removal and i was just wondering if it was the same one. If it is, then i would be able to offere you a lot of advice.

thank you for the reply..i appreciate it a lot..i think he is referring to a stone..that is why i am confused because the moment i had my KUB x-ray the remarks is this:"the right kidney measures about 8.1x4.3cm with a cervical thickness of 1.6cm while the left kidney measures about 8.8x4.6cm with a cervical thickness of 1.8cm. No Stone. the right ureter is slightly dilated. The urinary bladder is distended. IMPRESSION: PELVOCALYCRASIA, RIGHT UNREMARKABLE LEFT KIDNEY & URINARY BLADDER" my urulogist said that he's going to have ureteroscopy and stone basket...
i dont have problem in urinating what i feel is only a severe pain on my lower back and abdomen..do you think i will undergo an operation???

God bless...

Hi
If you have a stone obstructing your ureter I think it means it's too big too pass on your own. Besides you said you're in pain. Get rid of it.Kidney infections are no fun if you get one. Do you have a stent? Uteroscopy isn't too big a deal. I had one two years ago w/ laser lithotripsy and am scheduled for another one on both kidneys next month. Not sure what "basket" means though, maybe it's different.
I know surgery is scary but if it's outpatient it's not that bad. My experience was, go to outpatient surgery unit, put on johny, answer quetions, get IV, talk to dr and anestethia dr ( sp?) Wheel you in OR get put out, wake up in recovery, tell nurse I have to pee, get percocet. Go back to outpatient room, pee out some blood, ( you have to pee before they let you go home).Get dressed , leave, stop at wendy's drive thru( you need someone to drive you home) pick up prescriptions, go home. I didn't have too much pain after, took the percs for good measure though. Was home in less than 5 hrs.

A ureterscopy with the basket is a very simple basic procedure. You will probably have it done in the OR. They will put you out, then they will insert a scope with a camera into your urinary tract. They will locate the stone then use a tool they call a "basket" to grab the stone and remove it. It some cases they will insert a stent, but if you only have one stone you probably wont even get a stent. That depends on your doc though. You will get out the hospital the same day and you will be feeling 100% better within a few days. I had a similar procedure done, although they had to go clear into my kidney and i also had to have surgery directly on my kidney. Trust me, there is nothing to worry about. You will feel so much better after they remove that stone.

You may have had a stone in your ureter to begin with, but if you have not had any pain in a while, i would say that you passed the stone already. I would definitely get a second opinion from another doctor or at least ask your doctor what his reasoning is for wanting to take you to the OR. If the IVP came up normal with no stone, then there is no reason for a ureterscopy with basket treatment. Let me know what happens. Good luck!

I don't recall there being any herbal products, but plenty of fluids would help...Watch for fever...when passing a stone...you dont want to be hospitalized for sepsis...as well...my stones never pass...I had the staghorn stones taken out in the flank in 6/06...dont want that sx again but luckily I had a good surgeon experienced in this type of surgery...

Not a doctor, but I believe Flomax is what they give when the stone tries to pass.

Looks like you will probably have flexible URS done...The ureters are delicate but I have learned there are those scopes they use w/camara these days that enable the surgeon to go up the urinary tract and penetrate the stone

I hope your procedure goes well. I have had 6 treatments in 3 yrs, #7 soon, waiting for the CT KUB...mine like to play peekabo...in the parenchymal(tissue) and that is where they can't treat...
