Placing a nephrostomy tube is often done a day before percutaneous kidney stone surgery for a number of reasons, the main one being that the procedure causes some bleeding which usually stops by the next day making it easier to see and perform the surgery. It is usually done with local anesthetic using either ultrasound or standard fluoroscopy (x-ray) guidance. For more information on these procedures, you may want to review previous posting from 4/25/01 and 4/16/01 which describe this in more detail.
