Is Ureteroscopy used to Remove 6mm stone from Kidney?

Post a new topicby trikepapa on Sat Nov 14, 2009 8:48 pm

I am scheduled for Monday, Nov 16 for Kidney Stone Extraction. The stone is 6mm, in my kidney and causing ongoing pain, frequent urination, weak stream and frequent UTI I have read that Ureteroscopy is commonly used for stones in the bladder or uretor, but not in the kidney. Any clarification will be appreciated.

Yes i have had several of those procedures...you will still need to void(pass) the fragments...with a 6mm MAYBE just maybe you won't need a j-stent placed ...if you can avoid those dreaded monsters(stent) you will be fine..drink plenty of fluids and dance dance dance...dont be stagnant..GoodLuck,Bruce:)

Thanks Bruce,
I go under the "oscopy", :-) this afternoon, so i was glad to see your response this morning. I had stones in the ureter a few years ago and after they broke them up I had a Jstent. After 3 days, I demanded it be removed. I know how difficult that part of the process can be. I have a good urologist this time around and he knows I don't tolerate the stent well and has agreed not to use it unless "truly, medically necessary". Wish me luck, thanks for the info.

Update:
The ureteroscopy was performed yesterday. My urologist reported that my ureter was constricted so he was unable to pass the scope through to the stone in my kidney. He did have to leave a j-stent and wants to do another ureterscopy in 2 weeks. He speculated that my pain, frequent urination, weak stream and frequent UTI's may be caused by the constriction, rather than the stone in my kidney. I didn't think of it when he spoke with me following the procedure, but, I am curious if the j-stent was able to pass through the constriction or just up to the constricted point? If anyone has any experience with this type of situation, please share your thoughts. I'm also curious about what might be done if after 2 weeks with the j-stent he is still unable to get through the constriction?
Thanks,
Ron

Your double J-Stent had to be placed in order to stretch it...i have been through the same scenario...sorry they are not any pleasure at all...go to a pharmacy and get phenazopyridine hydrochloride over the counter...(aka AZO Standard) it eases urinary tract pain abit but, it also stains EVERYTHING it touches...i'm sitting here with a Drainage Tube from my left kidney and a Double J-Stent so you can be assured that i know what your going through...Nov 13th i had a 3 hour PCNL to remove all my stones(22mm-14.5mm) while trying to remove my Stent he decided i was under too long... after a mere 3 weeks my Double J-stent had encrustated so bad that i will be going back under this friday Nov 20th so my uro can remove it via laser..if you dont listen to anything i say REMEMBER THIS: if they attempt to remove your Stent while your awake..RUN!!! My very first stent was removed by an intern while i was awake with-out ANY pain meds and it had encrusted(calcified) and it don't NOT show up with a KUB... they go in with what feels like a Dodge Ram pick up with its doors wide open and the head lights on! oh yeah AND a garden hose AND camera AND Channel lock plyers...all while your over a container to catch the excess water...DON'T let them do that to you while your awake..im assuming that your a male... if you need to talk my name is (all together) im [moderator note: personal contact information is against the Terms of Use]....email me if you care to im safe and sane stone builder no worries...DRINK DRINK DRINK wake yourself at night and drink some more... stones form while your dehydrated and/or stagnant...doesnt really matter what you drink everything has water...i would advoid citrus and carbonated...unless you enjoy whizzing flames.. let me know how you are doing,GoodLuck,Bruce
