Post a new topicby dookielookie on Fri Aug 07, 2009 1:14 am

I have had pain that begins in the middle of my back on the left side just below my ribcage....it started last year..it would only happen in the middle of the night..and once a month...the pain is excruciating and radiates to my abdomen...i feel nauseous and need to take tylenol for the pain to go away....my doctor thinks it's a stone, but is it possible to have a stone for so long that just doesnt want to come out?? cause recently the pain has been happening every second day.../.my urine test showed a little blood in it, but renal ultrasound was negative...has this ever happend to anyone??? thanks for your help!

Yes I believe it is. I have 7 for an unknown length of time and my symptoms sound just like yours. I only found I had them thru a Cat scan as a result of a urine test that showed blood. My doc said ulta sound does not always turn them up but Cat scan does.

You need a CT scan - the ultrasound isn't as accurate. Your symptoms are that of a kidney stone - go to the Emergency room and they will likely order you a CT right there, and you can take the results back to your urologist. Stones will stay there, especially when they are larger; the dangers of waiting involve a stone lodging in the ureter, and swelling of the kidney.

Hi,

As I said, going for knee replacement and blood and white cells found in urine. Doc put me on 10 days of Cipro antibiotic thinking it could be a infection. Another test and still blood but less white cells. He was perplexed since I did not have the pain normally associate with stones. But because I had so much knee pain it was actually asking the stone pain. When I thought about it, I did have pain in the middle back - too high I thought for kidnesy but my wife said not, that is right where they are.

This pain comes and goes depending on posture. Anyway I asked is there a way to find out if its stones? A CAT scan is the best way, he said, so I did it and sure enough, 7 stones, one near the uretra exit. He then refered me to a urologist. She looked at the scan results and recommeded lithotripsy. But she proved hard to reach and hard to communicate with and I was not satisfied so I got a second opinion. I like the second opinion urologist much better, he was much more thoughtful and interested and actually touched me by beating on my back (my wife, a nurse, says any doctor who does not touch you avoid.) Monday I am scheduled for Litho.

There are basically 4 options as I understand it;
1. Litho
2. Stick a camera and laser and basket up you and try to grab or dissolve the thing
3. Cut thru the side into the kidney to grab it
4. Do nothing and let it pass naturally if it is not too large to do so.

Hope this helps

Litho can cause damage to pancreas for onset of Type II Diabetes, and can also lead to elevated blood pressure. The ureteroscopy with basket removal is much more precise, and I wish I had known abot this prior to three lithos for a very large, pecan-sized, kidney stone.

Best of luck!
