Does it hurt all the time?Hello,
I recently found out I had a 2.5cm stone in my right kidney. I went for the laser treatment and had the stent (double J) already. Now I am awaiting a probable 2nd laser treatment (5th CT scan tomorrow to confirm this) but I would like to know....is it normal that I feel pain everyday? It is a tollerable pain, not enough to run to emergency but still quite painfull. It comes and goes throughout the day and is more promonent in the evening after a day of running around at work. My Dr. actually looked a bit surprised when I told him this but just presvribed more pain killers. I told him that I even feel a slight lump in the right flank and it is sensitive to touch but he laughed and said it is impossible to feel stones..........I never said I thought I was feeling a stone but regardless, there is something painful there. Anyway, I would just like to know if anyone else feels pain on a regular basis. Thank you!
Re: Does it hurt all the time?I'm no doctor but a person with a stone. In this case mine is bigger than yours, is not something to brag about. These stones have barbs which can irritate the kidney. It becomes sore and there is swelling. I sometimes keep an ice-pac on it during the evening on my back flank. It does help. I have quit golf and any exercise because of the pain that gets worse. I have experienced everything you say everyday except for the feeling a lump. Now finally with insurance I plan to eliminate my 1cm stone. It sounds like your doctor is proactive which is good. Good Luck and success on the next try.
Re: Does it hurt all the time?Is your stone 2.5 mm? or cm? If it is cm, that is a very large stone. I just recently had a 22-25mm (the size of a small chicken egg) taken out through my renal pelvis area. This procedure is called a PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy or percutaneous nephrostolithotomy) If your stone is 2.5 CM, i am shocked that the doctor didn't preform this same procedure with you. When you say that they did a laser treatment, how was this done? Although the PCNL procedure is usually more invasive (requiring about 3-4 day hospital stay and at least 1 week out of work) it is worth it because they are usually able to get ALL of the stone out in one try. This is the recommended treatment for large stones. My stone was caused by infection and it was a stanghorn stone so it was a very weird size. It was originally found in the lower collecting chamber but later had moved to the very middle. I felt quite a bit of back pain when it had moved. It is very normal to have pain when you touch that part of your back especially if the stone is moving or causing inflamation of the kidney. I had hydronephrosis of my right kidney as well which means that my kidney was backed up for about 3 days and this also caused a lot of tenderness and pain in my back. This could be your case as well.
Good luck and hopefully they can get your stone cleared and get you back to normal!!!! --Haylee--
Re: Does it hurt all the time?Hello, thank you for your replies, much appreciated! Haylee, to answer your questions, my stone was 2.5cm and by lazer treatment I mean a Lithotripsy where they go up the urethra with a snake like instrument and laser the stone into fragments.
Well......it must be a Christmas miracle or something..*eye roll*...I had an apt. with my Dr. this morning to go over the results of my last CT scan. There is nothing more he can do for me as the last 2 scans I got show NOTHING (!!??!!) and he cannot explain the pain I am still having in that area. I must be the only person on earth who had 1 round of treatment on a very large stone and it was cleared up immediately!? Anyway, I am not complaining, obviously this is good news but I am still worried about these pains I am still having.........they are in the kidney/flank area and they only started when I had my kidney stone attack in September. Dr. is now sending me to a Nefrologist for further investigation as he too finds it a bit weird. So as it stand, I now have no stones but still stone pain and an ever increasing addiction to Supedol (Vicadin)!!! Whoo! Hoo!
Re: Does it hurt all the time? That is definately a christmas miracle. I had to have mine removed with surgery and i ended up having bleeding complications so after 6 weeks, i am finally normal. With my surgery they broke my stone up in pieces then suctioned them out. i was also very lucky that all of my stone was removed. Did you get your stent removed? My stent caused me a lot of flank pain and the doctor told me it was normal to have some kidney craming for at least a few days after the stent was removed. Hopefully the nephrologist can give you an insight to what might be going wrong. I have had many procedures and tests done to my kidney and most of them dont hurt. So dont be scared. Eventually, they will figure it out. Keep me posted.
Re: Does it hurt all the time?So finally saw a Nefrologist yeaterday for my somewhat mysterious condition. Turns out this "lump" I have been feeling in the kidney area along with the pain is most likely not related to the kidney stones I had....great....what now!? The Nefrologist did confirm though that my 2.5cm stone was indeed all taken care of but he'd like me to do 2 series of 24hr urine analysis tests just to be sure.
