Does Flomax really help pass a stone?

Post a new topicby sarahgirl99 on Thu Aug 07, 2008 1:19 am

I am hesitant to take the Flomax that my doctor prescribed. Does it really work for moving kidney stones out of the ureter?

Most studies show an increased likelihood of stone passage with Flomax (tamsulosin). Alpha-blockers essentially cause smooth muscle relaxation, in the case of Flomax, its intended use was for relaxation of the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck. However, since the ureter is also smooth muscle (i.e., under involuntary control, as opposed to striated, or voluntary muscle), it will cause relaxation of the ureter, which can lead to increased stone free rates. If you want to do the research, there are plenty of studies out there to look at (PubMed is a good resource, if you're willing to sort through all the papers). Most studies will agree that there is a significantly increased incidence of stone clearance (up to 40-50%) with medical therapy. Hope this helps.

In my case it did. I had an attack on February 29th. By the end of March it was still on it's way out. I could feel where it was each visit with the doctor - he didn't need to tell me I could tell him. I knew it was in my bladder and it was driving me crazy. He gave me some Flomax and I passed it within 24 hours.

HI
Well I can tell you in a few days or not if it helps me, ( I have another stone again) and I have some left over Flomax from my last stone. I just started the Flomax yesterday so we will see I say its def. worth a try. I am also drinking olive oil/lemon juice shooters and doing lots of jumping and stairs anything to get this bugger out! Good luck

Daughter was on it for two months. I didn't notice a difference for her. I did notice she had more pain urinating-hesitance. Took her off it.

Flomax is NOT supposed to be handled by women. If in doubt, read about this on any web search engine.
