A few questions about stints I forgot to ask my Dr.Im a 43 year old male. I am not new to kidney stones I have had a PNL 8 years ago to remove a 10 cm (yes cm). I have had lithotripsy to remove others that were smaller. I now have another huge stone that will again have to be removed by PNL. The problem is the stone has been blocking so long that it is damaging the kidney. My Dr. says that a stint has to be installed so the kidney can heal so that the PNL can be done. I dont know much about stints except that I was told I would be put under to have it installed and it is outpatient and no cutting will be involved they go in through the penis to install it. My questions are can you work and go about your daily routine with a stint in your kidney and how long does it take for the kidney to heal. Any other comments about this procedure will be appreciated. thanks for any help.
Re: A few questions about stints I forgot to ask my Dr.Stents can be brutal or they can go un-noticed...They have made them more flexible to help us along but you may still need to remain close to a toilet because of the constant urge to void... most important thing for you to remember is to drinks lots of fluids...Don't try to hold your urine you won't be able to...ask for the smallest stent possible for your stature and expect it to sloth off mucus membrane which can feel very un-pleasant when you void it...this is VERY IMPORTANT Stents can calcify in as quick as 3 weeks and be coated so evenly that is impossible to see with a KUB (mine was in over 3 months and have to be chiseled out with a laser) As for experience trust me when i say this...The Stent pull removal is a in office procedure with-out any compassion...I HIGHLY suggest to you as a man to man to be put asleep (outpatient) for this part of your ordeal... and if he ask why it will be clear that he has never had a wide awake stent pull...with you having a keyhole procedure(PCNL) they may take it out out the same time...and as for work...GoodLuck because it is balancing on a wire
Re: A few questions about stints I forgot to ask my Dr.Hi, I hope this goes well for you. Experience of stents seems to be very individual.
I had a stent for two months before percutaneous nephrostomy last November. It was incredibly painful, not even Pethidine touched the pain, & I could not leave the house because of frequency. It was removed along with the kidney stone.
Re: A few questions about stints I forgot to ask my Dr.Thanks for the responce. I guess I will have to go with the flow and hope I can work untill the surgery. I have another question but I will post it under another topic. Thanks again.
