renal cell cancer

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Mar 12, 2003 5:03 pm

I had a nephrectomy on 2/13/03, for early renal cell cancer in which it was, however I am experiencing alot of aches and pains and very much numbness in the surgery area and my hip and outer thigh, though they tell me this is normal they refuse to give me pain meds anymore, I have tried aleve, motrin 600, ultracet, darvocette, and my old mustle relaxers from a back injurie I had 6 months ago.( of course I tried these at different times I don't want more problems) but anyhow none of these seem to help in fact the ultracet and aleve seemed to make it worse and swell more. so I now suffer on and off with this, it seems to be worse at night, I am awake till 5:00 am and when I do get to sleep it is up and down. This is making me stay in bed most of 24 hrs. which I know is bad for healing but it is so uncomfortable to be up and even sitting. Does anyone have suggestions or do they have physical therapy for this? I have to go back to work in 2 weeks and I don't know if I will be able. THANK YOU

I had the same surgery as you, except my renal vein was removed as well, as I had stage 3 renal cancer, and my tumor was 7.5 cm. You have had very invasive surgery, and it will take at least 6 months for you to feel like your old self again. I found sitting very uncomfortable, too - I had to either lie down or stand up. There is no physio specifically for this, but I can't stress enough that it is important for you to walk, move around, in order to regain your strength. Just do it in short bits at first, and work up gradually. Lying around is only going to prolong your recovery. Good luck.
