Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Apr 11, 2003 6:57 am

My 79 year old Mother has just been diagnosed as having cancer in the right kidney, and has been told that surgery is the only option. Her surgeon has said that certain types of medication will not be able to be taken by her once the kidney is removed.Could you tell me what these meds. are? She has had heart trouble and a heart by-pass in the past.

There shouldn't be any problem with taking any medication but it will depend on her overall kidney function once the cancerous kidney is removed. She will need to be off of any blood thinner types of medication for a while before and after the surgery, but this is just temporary.

You may want to ask the surgeon what types of medication he's talking about.

First time I've heard this one, too. As long as the remaining kidney is healthy and all the cancer is removed, it should be business as usual once your mom has recovered from her nephrectomy. It may be that her doctor is just being extra-cautious, as some meds are known to be hard on the kidneys, and he just doesn't want her to take any chances with the one she has left. Makes sense to stay away from tobacco smoke, that's for sure. But like colgbrown said, I'd just ask the doc.
