hypoplasia of the kidney

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Oct 05, 2002 5:57 pm

we are currently adopting a 13 month old boy from Eastern Europe. We were told that upon an ultrasound they said that he had "Hypoplasia " of the right kidney. They can;t be certain so they need to do some test with a dye. If this truly id the case then can he be expected to live a normal life or can there be future complications. Also he has had no history of urinary tract infections and is healthy otherwise. The ultrasound can in all probability be wrong.. but I just need to kow what this diagnosis means.

Hypoplasia may simply mean a small, poorly developed kidney, but other possibilities exist. Ultrasound is often a crude imaging study for anatomic detail and making a solid diagnosis. Further study should clarify the issue.
One normal kidney is all that is required to lead a normal life.
