follow up kidney cancer

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Aug 21, 2002 6:05 am

My mother has had a radiacal nephrectomy last january. There were no signs of spreading of a small tumor. last week she had her checkup including an ultrasound of the left (operated) side and the right kidney as well as the aorta. I went in with her but i didn't know what to look at. To me everything looked normal. No black spots or anything strange. i asked the guy performing the procedure what I was looking at and he just said "the kidney". If there was anyting that did not belong there, what could I have seen? I just saw the inside of the kidney like the show you in books in grey colors.
thanks for helping me out. maybe I can reassure her a bit. She is so scared. other than that. she is feeling fine and has no complains, slowly getting back her strength as she 76 yrs it takes a while.

It would be very unlikely that anyone without ultrasound training would be able to recognize subtle abnormalities during real-time ultrasound.
If the technologist sees anything unusual, they take special images of that area for later review, along with representative images of the normal kidney etc.
I suspect the study will turn out OK.
Please check with her doctor for the final result and keep giving her the support she deserves.
