after kidney cancer - true?

Post a new topicby andypeterson on Wed Aug 29, 2007 5:06 am

I have a very specific question regarding one of my relatives who had kidney cancer at the age of 30 according to her. She said to us that she was treated by immunotherapy (IL2) which was successful and finally she was healthy.

Later on she went to a regular check up to a different doctor recommended by one of our other relatives and upon examining her kidney with ultrasound and taking urine sample as well, the doctor determined that her kidney is absolutely healthy and there was no sign of any problem what so ever. He also stated that it is impossible that the lady in question had kidney cancer and was treated by immunotherapy as it might have had signs in the tissue of the kidney and there wasn't any.
All of our family members are very much confused and as I extremely like the lady in question I would like simplify the situation simply asking your opinion regarding the following:
Do you think that it is possible that after having kidney cancer and after being treated by immunotherapy and after successful recovery the treated kidney could look absolutely healthy without any signs of damaged tissues etc.?

I would very much appreciate your answer - thank you very much in anticipation!

It is possible that she had a small cancer and the whole kidney did not need to be removed, only a small cancerous part, leaving behind a normally size and functioning kidney. The best way to find out is to get her medical records from where she was treated. Also you would expect some surgical scars unless she had one of teh new treatments of radiofrequency, highly focused ultrasound, or cryotherapy.

Thank you for your answer!

Regarding the treatment: she had immunotherapy and according to her she received interleukin 2, so there weren't any operations performed on her kidney that would have left any scars.
That was the reason that I also believed that whatever the second doctor performing the check-up told to my relatives on the first place - which in my opinion was very much inconsiderate - it might be possible that he was mistaken and what she said about recovering from kidney cancer was true indeed.

Regarding her medical records: she was very much aggravated when my relatives told her that they were confused because of the second doctor's opinion and she had felt so much offended that as of this moment unfortunately she doesn't talk to us so I am not able to get her medical records either.
The only thing that I could do for her is to ask further opinion from experts (eg. from you) of the situation and show it to my relatives.
