3 X 4 cm solid mass on LL pole kidney

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Jun 03, 2002 4:32 pm

I will be having my surgery soon and wondered what the recovery process will be, I have heard that I will be sore for 3-4 weeks. I am very tiny, 122lbs and very active, will this slow me down, and how long will I have to be off work, I am a registered nurse. Can you also answer are all solid masses cancerous for the most part or do you have to wait till then get in and send it thru patho? Thanks for your time wish me luck, I was the healthiest person until this hit me, I don't smoke, drink occasionally and exercise regularly, is this a common occurence without sypmtoms, they exactly found my mass by accident.

Unfortunately, most such solid masses are malignant; however fortunately, those found incidentally (as in this case) have the best prognosis.
Recovery may take only 2-4 weeks, but it is often 6 weeks before full work can be resumed.
Please ask your surgeon, as the recovery is somewhat dependant upon surgical approach.

I had a nephrectomy just about a year ago. My tumor was the same size as yours, was solid with some cystic areas and was found by accident also. I am not tiny(5'8") but I did weigh 120 when I had the surgery. I am doing great now. I was back to work after 4 weeks although I probably could have waited another week or two, but was bored. I was not feeling great when I went back to work and was able to leave whenever I felt like it. I am an executive assistant so I was able to sit/stand/walk around whenever I needed to. My bosses were just wonderful about it. My doctor knew during the surgery that it was cancerous and told my husband before I was out of recovery even though I had to wait another week for the actual path results. If you would like any more info just post here and I will tell you whatever I can. I wish you good luck and hope that yours is not cancer.

Hi! I had a right radical nephrectomy in Mar 2000. My surgeon made me stay home for about 30 days. I was pretty weak and sore the first couple of weeks but then I was ready to go back to work. I am male and weighed about 210 pounds at that time. It's been three years and I still have some numbness on my right side. I am not sure what the size of tumor was but they said all in all it was about the size of a football. I've not really had much complication from it. My Urologist follows up annually with an MRI. Everything fine up until this year. A Cyst (I hope) has enlarged on my remaining kidney and I am awaiting consultation with a specialist in Dallas, Southwestern Medical Center for a diagnosis and prognosis. Wish me luck!
