Recurrent Gross Hematuria; What to do?

Post a new topicby laddison on Wed Jun 24, 2009 4:43 pm

Hello,
About nine months ago I suddenly experienced a bout of Gross Hematuria with some pain on my left side. Since I am uninsured I visited a local clinic with a pay scale, they were amazed how red my urine was when doing the urinalysis. No infection was found, and they gave me a blood test with full metabolic panel...and everything turned up normal. I did enter a program in my city that provides health coverage for serious instances such as this, to send me to a urologist ..but this coverage only lasted three months. Most importantly, as a child of five I was diagnosed with kidney stones, and had as a result many years of urine analysis, blood tests, two lithotripsies, and one invasive surgery to remove a stone blockage when I was 10. So as a result of this experience, I have always known that I have a predisposition to getting kidney stones again. I also learned that I am allergic to IVP. When I did visit the urologist she did urine analysis and did find some crystals. I had a CT scan done without dye (because i'm allergic to it), and the doctor only found several very small stones on the right...and nothing else, she seemed to convey that my kidneys looked normal as well. She never examined me other than that. And when she called with the results of the CT she said she was not sure what was going on, and that maybe I should undergo a reverse pyelogram. I was unsure about the procedure, so I didn't make a decision. and then my coverage ended...

Ever since then i've had more episodes of gross hematuria and for the last few months it has occurred monthly usually nearing the date of my menstrual cycle. Usually it's only a little bit, and when I flush myself out it goes away. But there is always a burning sensation, and I even felt it a couple of times when I didn't see any visible blood in my urine. Today it happened again, and with more blood, more similar to the first time it happened. I don't know what exactly to do, I want to be healthy and fix anything in case it needs fixing, but it is so hard when i'm uninsured! At this point I really am worried. Any responses would be very welcome, thank you.
