High Calcium / Low Potassium - Need Some Advice

Post a new topicby kelleec on Thu Nov 15, 2007 7:13 pm

Hello,
My mother became ill in August (light headed / lots of mucus / not using the restroom to eliminate food waste). We initially thought it was a sinus infection - however it is not. I took her to a well known clinic and she had had blood and urine work done, and a colonoscopy. Colonoscopy was negative, however, still isn't using the restroom. Her blood test indicated an extremely hight level of calcium (14) and extremely low potassium (don't know the number off hand). When I asked the doctor (again, from an extremely well-respected hospital/clinic) he stated he didn't know what causes or what the treatment or what could happen from this. She does not have hyperparathyroid syndrome.

At the same time as becoming ill, my mother knealt down and she pulled a muscle or something - her calf and foot swelled quite a bit - he thought she sprained her foot (don't think so). It took almost 2 months for the swelling to go down (and she stayed off of it). Today, she informed me that it swelled up a bit last night. She is scheduled for vascular lab work (but not until December).

QUESTION: What causes high calcium / low potassium in the blood? What harmful effects could happen between now and mid-December? Any other information/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I want to see a new doctor because the one she is seeing doesn't have a clue. But she wants to have the vascular test and have the Dr. inform us of all the results and hopefully steps to follow. I don't think he will know anything more.

Any advise or anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!!!!!
