Medications after kidney removal

Post a new topicby Sandyrolf on Sun Sep 23, 2007 7:32 pm

This post does touch on something mentioned in the forum. But I still have a question. I have genital herpes Outbreaks are infrequent, once every year and sometimes longer in between. I do take Valtrex during an outbreak. I've done extensive reading on the subject so as to inform, educate and protect potential partners. I've met someone who had a kidney removed 1 1/2 yrs ago, due to cancer. Tumors were found on remaining kidney earlier this year and 1/5 of his kidney was removed. He is very cautious about taking meds and says his nephrologist strongly suggests consultation before taking any. After his second surgery the dr was surprised and pleased to see kidney function quite quickly in the normal range. My question is, are the commonly perscribed meds for Herpes, Valtrex and Acyclovir, hard on the kidneys?

Valtrex is metabolized in the liver but excreted by the kidneys. Your boyfriends doctor should be consulted to determine if there would be any effect in his remaining kidney

Thank you so much for your reply. B/F explained to me that he cannot take Advil, Aleve, because they are "hard" on the kidneys. Does the body handle them the same was as Valtrex - metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys?
